Tips and Recommendations

  • For a spicier chili, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to the spice mixture.
  • You can substitute ground turkey with ground chicken or lean ground beef if desired.
  • If you prefer a thicker chili, mash some of the sweet potatoes with the back of a spoon during the cooking process to thicken the sauce.

Instructions

  • 1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • 2. Add the ground turkey to the pot and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
  • 3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pot. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
  • 4. Add the diced sweet potatoes and red bell pepper to the pot. Stir well to combine with the turkey and onion mixture.
  • 5. Pour in the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, chicken broth, and tomato paste. Stir to combine.
  • 6. Add the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the pot. Stir well to incorporate the spices into the mixture.
  • 7. Bring the chili to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender.
  • 8. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, if needed.
  • 9. Serve the Turkey and Sweet Potato Chili hot in bowls. Garnish with shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, and a dollop of sour cream, if desired.
